One of the more interesting and under followed biotechs in the market just announced the official plans to start a major Phase III clinical trial for a drug that has an increasingly unmet need. The best part about VBI Vaccines (VBIV) is that the company already has the vaccine approved in multiple markets and has several other drug candidates in the pipeline. Despite the generally positive prospects for vaccine approval, the stock traded near the lows until the start of 2017. The recent pullbac...

Video length: 00:08:11 Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen’s two day testimony in front of Congress got off to a better start than most market participants could have hoped for yesterday. The Fed chair’s comments on inflation being a symmetric target – that rates could stop rising if inflation stumbles – is seen as perhaps a dovish handicapping of a hawkish policy stance overall: the Fed intends to normalize rates this year, so long as the dual mandate of price stability and maximum employment are met. To markets, this was essentially the ‘all clear’ signal: things are going well enough right now, but if the...

Despite a record drawdown from US oil inventories and the fact that Saudi exports to the US are at a 30 year low, the International Energy Agency (IEA) is backtracking their prediction of a global oil market rebalancing because of an increase in OPEC oil production. This comes as the agency, famous for underestimating demand, raised it and now predicts that global demand will increase by a historically strong 1.5% this year to 98 million barrels a day. Still, with disappointing market action, it seems the pressure on OPEC is rising even as the market is ignoring the longer-term impact of under-investment and signs that we are going to see a s...
Uber and Yandex, the “Google of Russia”, have agreed to merge their ride-sharing businesses in Russia and in five markets across Central Russia, a deal in which Uber cedes control of the market to the Moscow company after years of fierce competition. Diversified internet giant Yandex is the dominant player in Web search, maps and mobile navigation in the region. The deal marks Uber’s second retreat from a major international market, and represents another pullback from Uber’s breakneck global expansion, coming one year after it sold its China operations to Didi Chuxing a year ago. While the deal will allow the cash burning...
USDJPY: The pair continues to retain its downside pressure on correction. On the downside, support comes in at the 113.00 level where a break if seen will aim at the 112.50 level. A cut through here will turn focus to the 112.00 level and possibly lower towards the 111.50 level. Its daily RSI bearish and pointing lower supporting this view. On the upside, resistance resides at the 113.50 level. Further out, we envisage a possible move towards the 114.00 level. Further out, resistance resides at the 114.50 level with a turn above here aiming at the 115.00 level. On the whole, USDJPY looks to pullback on price rejection....
Earlier this month, the Riksbank removed the easing bias from their outlook. They had too. Do you remember why? Well, it’s because Sweden’s monetary policy is inextricably tied up with ECB policy. The Riksbank is beholden to Draghi. This meant that as Draghi plunged ever deeper into the accommodative Twilight Zone, the Riksbank had to follow him down the rabbit hole or risk seeing the krona strengthen to levels that could undercut the push to stoke inflation. In the process, Sweden got a giant housing bubble. The backstory here is hilarious and involves Paul Krugman. You should read it or maybe skim our retelling in “Albert Edwards, F...

The US stock market’s ongoing run of low volatility has inspired a torrent of commentary as the crowd struggles to make sense of the trend. Analysts at JP Morgan, for example, recently wrote that “a very low supply of economic surprises currently is by itself enough to explain the low level of market volatility.” Meanwhile, a strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute advised that the slide in volatility isn’t particularly useful for developing insight into future market activity. Whatever an unusually calm stock market implies, or doesn’t imply, here’s one more fact to consider: low vol is widespread across the major ass...
