The Chart of the Day is TRI Pointe Homes (TPH). I wanted to find a growth stock so I used Value Line to screen for companies having projections of 10% growth in both revenue and earnings. I used Barchart to sort that list first by the most frequent number of new highs in the last month, then again for technical buy signals of 80% or more. Since the Trend Spotter signaled a buy in 6/14 the stock gained 9.91%. TRI Pointe Group, Inc. is involved in the design, construction and sale of single-family homes. The company’s operating portfolio includes Maracay Homes in Arizona; Pardee Homes in California and Nevada; Quadrant Homes in Washin...

As Baupost’s President and Head of Public Investments Jim Mooney looks at the current volatility landscape, he uses a mathematical logic that considers the mechanics of how leverage impacts the risk management terrain. His logic (and likely that of his famous boss, Seth Klarman) is that statistically abnormal volatility – the CBOE VIX index was knuckle dragging near 9.50 in early Friday trading – leads to higher market leverage that is increasingly common to document as systematic, algorithmically driven strategies dominate markets. It is at this intersection that Mooney – known in part for his skills at finding value after a market...

Business Development Companies, or BDCs, are a popular investment class among income investors. BDCs pay dividend yields that far exceed the yields available from other asset classes. For example, the S&P 500 Index has a 2% dividend yield, on average. High-quality bonds aren’t much better—the 10-year U.S. Treasury Bond yields just 2.3% right now. Compare these puny yields with Harvest Capital Credit Corporation (HCAP), a BDC with a dividend yield nearing 10%. Harvest is one of 405 stocks with a 5%+ dividend yield. You can see the full list of established 5%+ yielding stocks here. Not only that, but Harvest pays its dividend each mont...
Heading into 2017, Wall Street was excited by the prospect of a U.S. president who sympathized completely with business. His promised tax and healthcare reforms were widely cheered by investors in the wake of his election. Yet the Congress has so far failed to deliver on those promises and investors are no longer giving the Trump administration a free pass based on the assumption that tax breaks are on the way. This loss of enthusiasm is reflected in the long periods of dullness the market has experienced since March. While the bull market leg which began with the November election remains intact, the market has proceeded in a halting fashion...

The day started off badly with — European stocks fell to the lowest level in 10 days as concern about potential antitrust collusion sent carmakers toward the worst decline in more than a year. Euro Stoxx 600 has now erased all the gains from the French Election euphoria… Nasdaq failed to achieve its 11th day in a row of gains as early European weakness was just too much for the machines to overcome… though they tried… (11 days would have been the longest winning streak since July 2009) Dow ended the week red, Trannies worst week since Brexit LPL’s Ryan Detrick notes that the Nasdaq has been up for 10 consecu...
Over the last few years, two new investment opportunities of note have come online. Both have the potential to rise in value more than anything else available to the general public… in history. The first is private startup equity (equity crowdfunding). This gives everyone the chance to invest very early in companies that are small enough to grow 100 times – or more. The second is digital currencies (Bitcoin and others). And that’s what we’re going to talk about today. Specifically, we’re going to explore what would happen if bitcoin went mainstream. As is the case with most new disruptive technologies, the world’s never seen anyth...
“Davidson” submits: Several months ago I said we could see the BH Rig Count peak near 1,000. It is hard to predict this, but near term it looks like a definite flattening is occurring. Relating this to past rig count levels is hard to do with the shift in horizontal drilling and then add the efficiency gains of ~70% range making comparables impossible. But, seeing a roll over at far lower levels than in the past should not be a surprise. The US oil production is not yet back to the July 2015 peak but we are quite close and likely to hit new production records in the next few weeks. Net/net efficiencies give us record US Production with we...
